| www.lavocah.org - the history of the Lavocah family |
Some time in the middle of the 19th century my great great grandfather, Jeremiah Lavocat,
emigrated from France to India, settling in Madras.
Work on the railways and the telegraphs spread his descendents around India,
although the majority remained in Madras,
until the end of the empire flung them to the four corners of the world.
Today there are Lavocahs in the United States, England and Australia
as well of course as India.
My name is Mike Lavocah. I was born in England in 1966 to a Danish mother and an Anglo Indian father. Curiousity eventually got the better of me. I made my first enquiries about the family in 1996 and began research in Earnest in March 2000 when I discovered Cathy Day's site to help those researching their family origins in India. I joined the India List and began visiting the Oriental and India Office Collection (OIOC) of the British Library which holds the Ecclesiastical Returns of the British Empire's former India Office.
The purpose of this site is to preserve the history of the family for its members. There are still many gaps to the story. If you have any information about the Lavocah family please contact me.
Take a look at the genealogical listings
Many family members that I have traced - almost half - have professed not to be very interested in family, and some have asked that information about them is withheld. Their wishes have been respected. If I have inadvertently published some private information on the site that you would like removed, please tell me - it will be removed immediately. However, information in the public domain such as India Office returns will not be removed.
Conversely, if you are trying to contact someone whose contact details are not given, it's worth contacting me - I may be able to pass on a message.
The family is connected to these surnames:
Alliss, Arathoon, D'Monte, Doyle, Dwyer, Henzie, John, Lamden, Leake, Lynsdale, McNair, Meade, Nagle, Roberts, Rodrigues, Ross, Rozario, Sims, Vanderput, Wilson
I'm especially keen to hear from anyone in the Arathoon and Vanderput families, who are very important in the early history of the family and about whom we know almost nothing.
All these names are in the list of keywords for the site so that people searching for them on the internet should find this site.
